PREVIEW: Trinity League gets started with No. 5 St. John Bosco hosting No. 9 Mater Dei

The Trinity League is not only one of the toughest leagues in all of California, but the entire country.  With nonconference play all wrapped up, the league gets started tonight.

Wasting no time in getting one of the most anticipated games underway, the league opener features St. John Bosco hosting Mater Dei High School.

Bosco, ranked 5th in the DigitalSports National Football Rankings and 1st in California, boasts a 4-1 record, only losing a 34-31 heartbreaker to Bishop Gorman, ranked 2nd in the nation.

Josh Rosen has performed well for the Braves so far.  The senior is widely regarded as one of the best passing quarterbacks in the league.  After Bosco’s loss to Gorman, Rosen responded with five touchdown passes in a 65-7 victory over Crenshaw.  He looks to take every bit of momentum into the game against Mater Dei.  Sean McGrew has been the other key element to the Braves offense, providing excellent runs on the ground with a keen eye for the endzone.

The Monarchs will not be an easy opponent.  Mater Dei currently sits in 9th in the nation and 3rd in California with an undefeated 5-0 record.  Quarterback Jack Lowary and running back Nick Hutson have been consistently getting points on the boards thus far.

Last year, the two teams met twice, both of which were dominated by St. John Bosco, giving the Braves a four-game win streak over Mater Dei.  In the first game, Josh Rosen completed 9-of-15 passes for 105 yards with one TD and one interception and Sean McGrew ran for 132 yards and a score on 18 carries.  The Braves walked away with a 20-2 victory.

The next time the teams met was in the CIF Pac 5 Division championship game which Bosco claimed 35-7.  Rosen went 8-for-14 with 95 yards and two score, while Sean McGrew complimented on the ground with 25 carries leading to 137 yards and TD.  St. John Bosco went on to win the state championship.

Now the two teams are set to face in an epic matchup.  Mater Dei has proven that it is a much stronger team than last year’s squad.  Rosen and McGrew have had a year to grow as players and look to extend Bosco’s streak over the Monarchs.

Whatever the outcome, we can surely expect excellent football for both teams.  The showdown begins tonight at 7:30pm.
