After weeks at No. 2 in the DigitalSports National Basketball Rankings, Mater Dei has finally taken over the top rank with a win over No. 22 Neumann-Goretti and a Montverde loss to Curie.
Rex Pflueger led the Monarchs to a 79-67 victory over Goretti. The 6-foot-6 junior point guard dropped 30 points, going on to be named the team’s game MVP.
Stanley Johnson, now playing for the No. 1 team in the nation and committed to the No. 1 basketball program at the collegiate level, Arizona, only marked 12 points in the game, but a win was all that was important to him.
Mater Dei got off to a huge start and led 39-27 at the half. The Monarchs extended the lead to as much as 14 points. In a late push, Neumann-Goretti cut the lead down to eight, but there was not enough time for the Saints to cause any worry.
This victory and Montverde’s loss causes some great changes to DigitalSports’ Top 5. Mater Dei is on top followed by White Station and Rainier Beach. Montverde dropped down to No. 4 with Curie jumping up to No. 5.
Mater Dei’s next game is against JSerra Catholic on Friday, January 24. The Monarchs look to show that they are the No. 1 team in the nation.
